Hi George - thanks for the congrats - it's appreciated.

The way I see things in our profession regardless of what the client comes in with is all the same. I use the same approach with all clients, though that approach can be diverse and sometimes a bit complex. I work and teach my students to be flexible and spontaneous while working from a basis of techniques, a few of which you have mentioned.

It's not what the client is doing but why they do it and the why is emotionally driven. Of course some direct suggestion after the emotional / feelings work is done helps reinforce along with metaphor, indirect and embedded suggestions. But I feel the key to it all is to find the subconscious emotional purpose / need / reason for the behavior, which as we know isn't logical as some people would like to believe.

I know my answer is difficult and most people in my classes, well actually almost all of them, find trouble with my response because they are looking for an A, B C - do this, then this and this model which I have found in my vast experience isn't how our work is done effectively.

Treat these clients just like you would anyone who is using a substance that is causing problems, just like the way an overweight person abuses / uses food. The better part of this is that the tobacco is foreign and not a necessity to the body unlike food.

    My best,
    Tom

Robert - I just went to the NGH site and read the thread. Yes, finding the ISE is very important, and dealing with it is essential (just modifying a smoking script won't do it).

Regarding benefits and strategies as the client becomes chew-free... I have a notion that allowing them to experience the buzz and the calming and setting an anchor to be fired as needed would be a good approach. The notion that one can anchor in the buzz they felt and enjoyed with out having to actually do the offending action (chewing, drugging) would spark the imagination and possibly be a wonderful motivator since the new action is healthful and they can get the feeling they desire. I suspect it would take the client much practice and desire to both quit and to feel great... but something tells me this would work. Any thoughts? Have you worked with other chewers since that first one? Any word from Nicoli about his success? George

Hi George, You popped up in me e mail as wanting to be a friend on my site. I must admit I haven't got to grips with blogs yet and still not sure how to use it!
I tried to categorise you and others but have not been able to. Oh well.

I started in business on the 14th of March National Stop Smoking Day in the Uk. and developing corporate messages, presentations and direction still and want to launch into the corporate world. I was thinking of organising my own Trade Fair and inviting people in to pay for stands etc. I'll chat again sometime in the future busy now. Life in a state of change doing 3 jobs just now. Byeee
